About Port-Vendres:
"Maritime" Port-Vendres offers visitors both picture-postcard splendour and historical interest. At its heart is the port- the only deep-water port in the region- which combines commercial, fishing and sailing boats.
It is very nice to live at Port-Vendres with its charming port where you will find pleasure boats as well as fishing boats. It is also a stop for magnificent cruse boats. You will be won over by its quiet atmosphere, its authentic environment, wild coves, beaches & wonderful hills where broom, gorse bush, lavender & wild thyme get together to form a colourful picture full of Mediterranean scents.
You will enjoy walking alongside the quay, observing the boats, buying fresh fish of the day or dining in the many restaurants in town (open all year round). You will appreciate the open market on the Obelisk square (on Saturday morning), in front of the residence, where you will find local specialities and marvellous vegetables and fruits ( alsofreshly baked bread available every morning nearby).
You will be impressed by the variety of fish, seafood, seashell, that you will find every day on the well-known "criée" of Port-Vendres (fish market). From April to November the "petit train" runs regularly between Port-Vendres and Collioure. It takes you through vineyards and along picturesque roads, passing castles and monuments, and enables you to admire the wonderful views of the coastline. You'll be enchanted by this trip through the remarkable places that so many famous artists have painted.
Port-Vendres has three beaches, two to the north (crique de l'huile and crique d'en Bau) and one to the south (wonderful site of Paulilles). The beach and the bay of Paulilles are 1.8 miles away downtown towards Spain. You will find a car park, pedals boats, windsurf, a bar and a restaurant ("le Sole mio") open each day in July and August.
The closest beach & the secluded creek "la Mauresque" are only 5 mn' walk from the apartment, in a wonderful setting. "La Mauresque" which you can see from the apartment occupies a site of great natural beauty (this is a conservation area).
The charms of Collioure are also just minutes away.
Nestling where the Pyrenees meet the sea, Port-Vendres is a lovely village which will enchant you with its colours, its light and the beauty of its site. The culture and gastronomy of the region and the exceptional climate will ensure that your stay here will be memorable.
About the surrounding area :
Port-Vendres lies at the foothills of the Pyrenees, on the slopes of which are grown some excellent vines, notably those of Collioure and the fortified wine of Banyuls. Those who enjoy walking can follow the many tracks through the vineyards, and be rewarded with breathtaking views of the Vermillion Coast and the Corbieres mountains. The rugged coastline provides charming secluded beaches and opportunities for fishing and scuba-diving.
The region is steeped in history, and many fruitful excursions can be made to its Medieval villages, fortresses, Cathare chateaux and beautifullly restored abbeys.
Just over the Spanish border, the Costa Brava, Cadaques, Figueras and Gerona are also within easy reach.
LOCAL ACTIVITIES : diving, surfing, swimming, tennis, walking, sailing, cycling, fishing, horse riding, golf, wind-surfing, water skiing, mountain biking, roller blading.
Hiking :
Due to the diversity of the landscapes, the Côte Vermeille is an ideal place for a family hiking alongside the sea as well as for an expert rambler. You will find a lot of paths very well described in the "Topo Guide" of the Côte Vermeille distributed by the Tourist Information Office of Port-Vendres. You can discover all the paths and tracks undulating around the vineyards and the scrubland, the old farmhouses, the signal towers (Fort St Elme, Ermitage de Consolation, Tour Madeloc, Phare Béar) the Roman Churches, and the panoramic views of the sea, Spain, and the many natural cirques which compose this land. The Côte Vermeille is the last district before Spain with wine producing tradition. The vineyards create a unique landscape scattered with dry low walls and small cabins called "casots". You will be captivated by the exceptional mildness of its weather, its colors, light and beauty that inspired the greatest artists such as Picasso, Matisse, Derain, Dufy, Chagall...
The sea reserve and the diving :
"LA RESERVE" is the first and the unique natural sea reserve in France. Off Port-Vendres, between Banyuls and Cerbère, this reserve covers over 1606 acres of sea along 3,5 miles of coast. Beyond its scientific interest, its aims to make the users of the sea to contribute to the protection and the restocking of the natural local heritage. "LE SENTIER SOUS-MARIN" has been put up at the beginning of the beach of Peyrefite, within a downwind bay. The visit is made by snorkeling with flippers on the surface alongside an unmarked path in only a few inches of water. It is ideal for children who want to explore and discover the underwater beauty. The depths of the sea near the Côte Vermeille are teeming with a lot of treasures. Three wrecks are located off the Cap Béar. They are accessible to the experienced divers. In addition, the Natural Sea Reserve of Banyuls-Cerbère is a true paradise for the divers with a myriad of rare species.
(We highly recommend visiting the magnificent aquarium of the Arago laboratory of Banyuls sur Mer).
